IMF chief:How Police found blood on bed sheet

Paris— The head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, resigned from his post late Wednesday from a jail cell in New York, where he is facing sexual assault charges.

In a letter made public by the IMF, Strauss-Kahn wrote of the reasons he was standing down with "infinite sadness," but he also forcefully maintained his innocence.

Strauss-Kahn, meanwhile, who has been placed on suicide watch at New York's notorious Rikers Island prison, is expected to make a new plea for bail today.

He faces a number of charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a maid in New York's Sofitel hotel on May 14, including committing a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and forcible touching.

A judge in New York on May 16 rejected a first bid for bail despite the offer of a $1 million guarantee, saying there was a risk he would flee the country.

France has no extradition treaty with the United States.

In a second bail proposal to be considered at a court hearing later in the day, Strauss-Kahn's attorneys proposed posting $1 million cash bail and confining him to 24-hour-a-day house arrest with electronic monitoring. He has already rendered his passport.

On May 20, a grand jury is expected to make a decision in the case. Grand juries issue indictments if they determine there is enough evidence to go to trial -- which would be months away.

According to her lawyer, the 32-year-old woman accuser said she was "scared" but would testify against Strauss-Kahn.

Jeffrey Shapiro said that his client, from the West African state of Guinea, had been reunited with her 15-year-old daughter in a "safe place.
